Description

This inquiry activity teaches students about the chemistry of household chemicals. It allows them to conduct experiments and gather evidence using the online laboratories Acid-Base Solutions and pH Scale: Basics Lab. Students work through an inquiry cycle model and acquire scientific investigative skills. They investigate three research questions: (1) What does pH measure? (2) What type of chemical solution can cause a chemical burn? (3) How does adding water to a chemical solution change its pH level?

This inquiry activity is based on the Structure Controversy scenario and includes a Debate phase. Students debate the question: Should dangerous household chemicals be banned? Students in this ILS are assigned to argue the YES position.
